Earth Hour Enlightenment

I lit my favourite candles last night well in advance of the 8 pm start of Earth Hour - to be ready when  hubby and I switched off the lights. It's become a tradition in our household - not that it saves alot of strain on the energy grid, but it is just our small way to remind ourselves that we belong to the human race - the default stewards of this tiny little planet of ours. It's our way of acknowledging the work we have to do to preserve our delicate eco balance and sustain life on earth.

There is a certain ethereal tranquility that falls over the house once we unplug. I went to the front window to watch our neighbourhood fall into darkness, however it was apparent that they all didn't get the memo. But I am proud of our local restaurants that really get into the spirit of Earth Hour, advertising romantic candlelight dinners.

We need these reasons to come together and act as one race - united earthlings - and connect over that which we share. For one hour we focus on that which unites as opposed to that which divides us. And if nothing else, for one hour on a Saturday night, there is no background noise, no lights, and no barriers to romance.

There's a Hush That Comes

It's Earth Hour tonight. An excuse to turn them off, light 'em up and just be.

You could snuggle by the light of the silvery moon, or do some dancing in the dark. Just remember -- you can't fight the moonlight. But star lights -  they shine bright!

So tonight at 8:30 pm, kill the lights, light some candles or just gaze at the stars. Take a walk in your neighbourhood and you'll feel there's a kind've hush all over the world tonight ...

Happy Earth Hour world.

Hour of No Power

So tonight at 8:30 my house will glow from the flickering of candles; the television will be dark and silent; computers will be turned off and hubby and I will sit in the dark to observe Earth Hour. Not really. It will be romantically dim with no distractions. I figure we can make like pioneers and amuse one another without technical intervention.

I may even pour a glass of cold wine - that would be fitting and celebratory. I enjoyed this hour last year. It was a jolt to realize just how much background noise we get from our electrical gadgets and much we depend on them for entertainment. I am looking forward to an hour without power and the peace - and romance- it will bring.

Happy Earth Hour everyone.

Do it in the dark - for Earth Hour

Tonight is Earth Hour - an event to engage the world to take action on global warming. Everyone around the globe is invited to turn off their lights for one hour, at 8:30 pm local time. I remember we did this last year and it was kind of cosy and romantic by candlelight ... and the idea of the people of Earth acting as one for a cause is even more romantic.

The Earth Hour website is encouraging bloggers to write a live blog post during the event and tag it with earthhour or voteearth, and your location. The DailyGreen website has 8 Sexy Ways to Spend Earth Hour (then watch the birth rate sky rocket in nine months, which will raise another issue - overpopulation).
I don't have any big plans but whatever I do - I'll do it in the dark, if only for an hour.
